M.R. Hyker and his crew of Maryland hikers ventured into the woods of central Pennsylvania to explore Rothrock State Forest. Leading a hike on sections of the Mid State Trail, as well as many other Rothrock trails, Mike put together a nice circuit hike for a weekend of backpacking. The Quehanna Trail is a 74 mile circuit trail in Moshannon and Elk State Forests. The trail is a great destination for backpacking trips, be it a short weekend trip or a week long boot buster. Just a little south of the Mason-Dixon line, in our neighboring state of Maryland, and just west of route I83, is the Prettyboy Reservoir Park. M.R. Hyker does a short 5 mile out-and-back hike on some newly revived trails in this area. Details on this hike, along with maps and pictures can be found at his website.

The start of the Ironstone Loop at its intersection with the Mid State Trail is a steep descent down the Tussey Mountain ridge. This section of the trail is called Indian Steps. Scott and Tim climb the steps and hike east on the Mid State Trail to do an after work shuttle hike of a little over three miles. There are a number of mountain biking trails located in Rothrock State Forest. Those located in the Coopers Gap area are used almost exclusively by the mountain biking community. Scott and Dan explore some of these trails, hiking a circuit hike of about 5.5 miles on trails with names such as Beautiful and Shittaka Trail.

PAHikes.com posts the first hike of 2011, a winter hike in Bear Meadows. Doing the 3.5 mile Bear Meadows Trail circuit hike, Scott, Shari, and Dan experience a winter wonderland in Rothrock State Forest, not to mention observing some ill equipped nature lovers taking on the snow covered roads in little more than front-wheel drive.
